For electrical equipment to function properly, neutral to ground voltage need to be as close to zero volts as possible. 

Over time, their connection may wear away or weaken, and voltage between neutral and ground could increase beyond zero volts. 

You may have experienced this type of electrical fault before. When operating stereo equipment, you hear a constant hum. The hum could be the result of a bad neutral to ground connection.
